Company vs
Recreational
HVDA has two groups of dancers. Those groups are company and recreational (rec). Looking to dance with us at HVDA? Read about the key differences between each group below. We’d love to dance with you either way.
Company vs Rec
Rec
We accept dancers at every stage of their dance career. Because of this, we offer classes for all skill levels. Our rec classes are open to the general public and range from beginning classes to advanced ones. Rec classes do not compete but are a great way to build up skills and confidence.
Company
Our company team is for dancers looking to take their dance career to the next level. Company dancers must complete a minimum of eight hours a week in a variety of classes including ballet, strength and conditioning, hiphop, etc. Company dancers also learn specialized routines by our trained faculty and compete them nationwide. Each year, auditions for company are held in the early summer.
Why join company?
The Competitions.
Our company dancers enjoy one of the most exciting parts of studio dance: competitions. Competitions begin in late fall and continue until the start of summer. Our company dancers are assigned to a number of group dances, but also have the choice to learn additional solos or duos. All dances are choreographed and taught by our faculty.
The Character Development.
Competitions allow dancers to perform their routines for panels of judges and live audiences. They are a great opportunity to build up confidence and grit. Our dancers compete for titles frequently accompanied by trophies. The next time you’re in the studio, check out our lobby for some of the hardware HVDA has taken home! We love competitions because of the energy each dancer brings to the stage. Every competition is a massively fun environment full of teamsmanship and love for the sport.
The Travel.
Many competitions are held in the Portland area, but HVDA is not limited to in-state; many of our dancers have traveled to California, Nevada, and Washington for competitions. If families decide they would like to further compete a solo or duo, they have the ability to travel to additional competitions, in-state or out-of-state. We admire the way traveling to competitions expands our dancers' horizons beyond the studio.
